Last night, the Protea’s choked yet again. Its not like people were in shock. It was more of a case of “sooner rather than later”. Our cricket team has become synonomous for being the most prolific chokers in the sport. Just like New Zealand in the recent Rugby WC and Spain and Holland in the football versions.
But what is the problem within the system. Is it selection? Is it political ? Is it just poor managment of the team ? With all due respect to the likes of Smith, Kallis and Gibbs. I feel in a World Cup tournament, a specialist team is required and i dont feel the likes of whom i mentioned are cut out for this version of the game. Im certain there are players within the ranks that will duefully oblige if given the chance.
The main reason im writing this, is to see whether the general public agree to the quota system within South African sport. 16 Years since democracy and unity took place, have our sporting teams faired better or worse of late. Apart from rugby and the ‘96 Bafana team and a few olympic gold medals, we dont have much to show for. Espescially for a country where sports is not only a passion but also a part of everyday life for some. Is the quota systeme really justified ?
Are players who deserve to be in a team on merit being left out due to the quota system. Were Gibbs and Duminy picked for quota or merit ? Will the rugby teams both national and at a Super 14 level have better squads if it were not for quota. Would our teams fair better if they were picked on merit and not quota ? There are many players that dont even require the quota system to be where they are. The likes of Hashim Amla and Bryan Habana are about the best in their various sports from around the globe. They would be picked not just for SA, but for any nation, not due to their ethnic background, but merely because they deserve it.
My point of view is simple. If you good enough, you belong there. Regardless of your race, gender etc If someone better than you is left out, simply because they do not meet quota requirements, then for me that is injustice. Not just to the individual, but to the nation as a whole. You are crippling national pride and therefore diminishing hopes of achieving much.
